During his speech to the Parliament of Ghana on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought a moment of lightheartedness and surprise when he remarked, “India has over 2,500 political parties.” He paused briefly, sharing a smile as the audience reacted with murmurs. “I’ll say it again, 2,500 political parties,” he laughed, encouraging even stronger responses from the members of Parliament. Utilizing English for his address, PM Modi embraced the topic of democracy, referring to India as the "mother of democracy" and underscoring the significance of transparency and dialogue within a democratic framework. “Genuine democracy fosters conversation and debate. It brings people together, upholds dignity, and champions human rights,” he declared.

He articulated in English, “For us, democracy is more than just a framework; it forms a core part of our values.” Modi pointed out the immense diversity in India as a vital element of its democratic strength, stating, “With twenty distinct parties governing various states, 22 official languages, and countless dialects, this diversity is why individuals who come to India have always been received with open arms.” He further added, “This same spirit enables Indians to assimilate seamlessly no matter where they are.”

Following PM Modi's address, the Speaker of Ghana's Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, echoed the astonishing figure of "2,500 political parties," which sparked laughter among Ghanaian MPs as well as PM Modi himself.

After delivering his remarks, PM Modi interacted with the MPs, shaking hands and greeting them warmly. His trip to Ghana marks the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 30 years and is part of a broader five-nation journey. Following his time in Ghana, PM Modi is set to head to Trinidad and Tobago for a two-day visit from July 3 to 4. This will be succeeded by a trip to Argentina from July 4 to 5, after which he will attend the 17th BRICS summit in Brazil along with a state visit. Finally, PM Modi will conclude his travels with a visit to Namibia.
