
The Dubai court has fined an Indian nationalist, Dirham 250,000 for posting remarks and images on a social media platform, defaming a leading Indian Jewellery brand. The court also ordered the defendant’s deportation.
The images and remarks posted by the accused gave an impression that the jewellery group’s workers celebrated the independence day of Pakistan.
The Dubai Court issued the verdict in the absentia against B.P.A for the alleged cybercrime. While the jewellery company said that it had withdrawn the case after getting an unconditional apology from the accused. But, the Dubai Public Prosecution went ahead with the charges.
Said Fouchal Legal Translation Services, a legal translation of the court verdict said that the court issued the verdict on Monday (March 13), along with orders to delete the photos and deactivate the accused person’s Facebook account for one year. The judgment is subject to appeal.
The 26-year-old accused was arrested by Dubai Police in August last year, he hails from Thrissur, Kerala. The investigation found that the images posted were manipulated of Pakistan National Day celebrations, held at a money exchange. The accused also posted a message appealing people to boycott Malabar Gold products.
The jewellery company claimed this act damaged the company's reputation.
According to earlier reports about the controversy, rival business to malign the company’s brand reputation spread the image of a cake- engraved with the Pakistan national flag- being cut.
Malabar Gold instantly distanced itself from the image and filed a police complaint in Dubai against the alleged social media misuse.
The managing director of international operations for Malabar Gold and Dimanonds, Shamlal Ahmad MP, said that the verdict is a strong warning to all social media abusers, who use these platforms to defame individuals and companies. These types of actions attract strict punishment in the UAE, he said.
