A Saudi Arabia woman who dared walk outside without a hijab is now facing calls for her to be executed.
The image, believed to be taken in the country’s capital Riyadh, was reportedly posted under the account name of ‘Malak Al Shehri’ which has since been deleted.
Although, the image has now been retweeted many times and caused outrage among users. One man even stated that, “Kill her and throw her corpse to the dogs”.
“She deleted her tweets but they didn’t stop, so she deleted her account.”
According to an anonymous student, Ms Al Shehri had said that, she was going to go out for breakfast without either a hijab or abaya, a traditional Saudi body covering.
The student claimed that, the woman had received death threats for merely posting the image. “So many people retweeted it and what she did reached extremists, so she got threats,” the student said.
One User Graeme Robinson tweeted, “The world needs more brave women like MalakAlShehri, not cowardly bigoted men who want her killed”.
On the other hand, this week Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talai said that women must be allowed to drive.
He posted on Twitter, “It’s high time that Saudi women started driving their cars.”
“Preventing a woman from driving a car today is an issue of rights similar to the one that forbade her from receiving an education or having an independent identity.”
