YouTube Premium started in 2018, and since then, one of its main features has been the background playback option for subscribers. This feature lets users continue to listen to videos even when they minimize their web browser or turn off their phone's screen. Recently, Google has made it clear that this feature is not allowed on third-party mobile web browsers. Before, users without a premium subscription could use background playback on these browsers. By restricting this feature, the Google-owned video platform might encourage more people to subscribe to its paid service. According to a spokesperson from Google, Android Authority reported that a recent update for YouTube stopped background playback for non-Premium users. The company mentioned that "Background playback is a feature meant only for YouTube Premium members. While some non-Premium users could access it through mobile web browsers in certain cases before, we have made updates to ensure a consistent experience across all our platforms. "

With the new update, the audio will immediately stop when a non-Premium user turns off their screen or switches to other applications. Users on platforms like Samsung Internet, Brave, and Vivaldi have reported this change on Reddit and X. Those attempting to use the background workaround are now seeing a "MediaOngoingActivity" notification before the media controls disappear altogether. Reportedly, typical solutions like clearing browser cache and altering Picture-in-Picture settings no longer work. The recent update appears to be Google's strategy to encourage free users to opt for a subscription. In India, the cost for the YouTube Premium plan starts at Rs. 149 per month, providing users with ad-free video and music access alongside background playback. The Family plan, which extends the same benefits to up to five additional members, is priced at Rs. 299 per month. The two-member plan costs Rs. 219 per month.

There is also a YouTube Premium Lite subscription available in India for Rs. 89 per month. Launched back in 2018, the Premium plan allows subscribers to access content and stream music without ads. Additionally, they can download videos to watch offline whenever they like.
